There are several general steps in the process of joining NAIM as a staff member.
First, get in touch with us. We would enjoy getting to know you, and helping you know more about who we are and what we do.
'Get to Know NAIM'
After that, we will invite you to one of our 'Get to Know NAIM' Gatherings. This is an informal way for you to get to know us, and us to get to know you. We will cover the basics of our vision and mission, the work that we do in First Nations communities, and opportunities for you to join. We hold these Orientation Gatherings in various locations across Western Canada and Washington State.
Cross-cultural Experience
Anyone interested in joining NAIM should have some cross-cultural experience. The world is diverse, and not everyone sees, thinks, or responds in the same way. We can learn from each other, yet understanding these differences takes time. So whether it is working, living, or volunteering in a different cultural context, we believe that this is an important step in preparing you to serve alongside the Native American/First Nations peoples. Tell us your story.
You might consider participating in NAIM's Summer Ministry Initiative (SMI) program. A three or seven week summer program, SMI places families or teams in a reserve or urban setting for hands on ministry. You will begin to build relationships with Native people and NAIM staff.
Formal Application
In most cases, formal application for full-time staff is completed after one participates in an Orientation Gathering and has met the cross-cultural requirement. The application includes references and NAIM's doctrinal statement. The Recruitment Team reviews applications and if qualifications are met and references are in good order, you will be approved as an Applicant.
Interview and Orientation
Orientation and interviews are usually held at the NAIM office over the course of a week and includes a personal interview, oral and written Bible review, support development training and an orientation to NAIM. The Recruitment Team reviews all the information gathered and as the Lord leads, the Applicant can be granted Accepted Candidate status.
Sustainable Income
The Accepted Candidate's first job is to raise prayer support and sustainable income for NAIM for their ministry position. If you are going the regular missionary route, this will include financial support raising. If you are coming on as a community member missionary, you will need a job in the community where you will be placed.
PATH
This eight-week training program is held once a year, and so can be fulfilled either during the sustainable income phase or after taking your field assignment, depending on the timing.
Field Assignment
Once an Accepted Candidate reaches their full sustainable income, they assume their field assignment. A tentative field assignment, including location and ministry focus, is agreed upon between the Accepted Candidate and the Operations Council early in the sustainable income phase. This decision is confirmed when the Accepted Candidate reaches full support.
